England Haiku Number 27: William Shakespeare describes England’s fourth goal, Wembley, 30/07/1966

Soft! Moore’s princely pass,
Blithe, hale intruders swarm, sense
Job’s done. Hurst! Rapture!

You can see the goal which sealed England’s 1966 World Cup victory – and hear the Kenneth Woostenholme commentary which inspired our idea of how the Bard might have interpreted matters – here.

Happy St George’s Day, happy Shakespeare’s 450th birthday. Thanks to those of who read the England haiku series in the last three-and-a-bit weeks. There were some haikus which didn’t quite make the cut – if we have the time, we’ll put some or all of them up separately.
